Vintage Royal China Recipe Pie Plates

Discover the vintage Royal China recipe-themed pie plates.
I had seen recipe pie plates before but I had never heard specifically of the ones by Royal China until eBay sellers 2DogsDigs discussed them recently on this Youtube video. They learned and now I have learned that some of these pie dishes are very hard to find and, therefore, quite valuable.

Made in the 1970s and 1980s, these ceramic pieces remind us of Grandma’s kitchen. Each one has fluted edges and a recipe printed on the inside. They have an Americana or country-style feel that is definitely nostalgic.

Many other manufacturers made recipe pie plates but Royal China Company pie plates in general seem to command the best prices. Of course, value depends on rarity of the particular recipe as well as the design, condition, etc. In the last three years of sales on eBay, these dishes have sold from $10 to $718. The rarest pattern can perhaps be determined by the two that fetched the highest prices. That is, the Sweet Potato Pie and Peanut Butter Pie plates.

Of course, there were other companies creating similar pie plates at the time.  These pie plates were very popular at the time and decades later they are popular again! A few of the other manufacturers who made similar pie dishes are Rawleigh, Watkins and Good Housekeeping. The Maple Walnut Pie plate by Good Housekeeping is also a particularly valuable pie plate.

In terms of baking pies, these pans are considered to be of good quality. They are made of a ceramic material that is good for absorbing heat slowly and distributing it evenly, which is perfect for pie baking. They’re generously sized, which keeps fillings from overflowing and the recipes themselves don’t require a lot of unusual ingredients. The recipes are also fairly simple and traditional making the resulting pies taste as most people expect an old-fashioned pie to taste. Interestingly, the recipes are just for the filling and not for the pastry. I do love it when a collectible is practical.

But are the recipes any good? I was unable to find much information in that regard but saw a few references online indicating that the apple, pecan and quiche recipes are good. Of course, if you paid hundreds of dollars for one you might not want to bake a pie in it.

Do you bake pies? Do you collect recipe-themed pie plates? Do you know if the recipes on these plates are good?

Best-Ever Buttermilk Biscuit Recipe Martha Stewart

The Best Ever Buttermilk Biscuit Recipe Is by Martha Stewart

The Best Ever Buttermilk Biscuit Recipe Is by Martha Stewart

MARTHA STEWART'S MADE-FROM-SCRATCH BUTTERMILK BISCUITS RECIPE

One of the foods that I have fond memories of from growing up are biscuits, buttermilk biscuits. They were always buttery and moist and just plain delicious! More recently, I thoroughly enjoyed the freshly baked, homemade biscuits that were delivered to my mother-in-law's home after her funeral and left determined to learn how to make a great buttermilk biscuit.

Biscuits are comfort food to me and I love the possibilities that they deliver. They are (as I recently discovered) easy to make and you can have them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can have biscuits and gravy or a sausage or ham and egg biscuit. You can have them with fried chicken and mashed potatoes or with homemade corn chowder. Glaze them with milk and sugar and they make great strawberry shortcake.

On this page, learn how to make buttermilk biscuits as I did, from Martha Stewart, and you too could be eating biscuits every day. The recipe that Martha shared with me and that I'm sharing with you first appeared in a 2002 magazine and then in her 2002 Annual Recipes cookbook.

BAKING TIP

Biscuits require a gentle touch and there's no rolling pin required.

RECIPE

Cook Time
Prep Time: 5-10 Minutes
Total Time: 18 - 20 Minutes
Serves: About 12

Ingredients

• 4 cups all-purpose flour
• 4 tsps baking powder
• 1 tsp baking soda
• 1.5 tsp salt
• 1 tsp sugar
• 1 cup cold and unsalted butter
• 2 cups buttermilk

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
2. Measure the 4 cups of flour by spooning it into your measuring cup and levelling it with a knife.
3. Put the flour in a large bowl.
4. Whisk in the baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar.
5. Cut the butter into cubes and cut it into the flour until mixtures resembles coarse crumbs using a pastry blender or two knives. (Alternatively, as both Martha Stewart and I do, put part of the flour into a food processor, add the butter cubes and pulse a few times until crumbly. Then return the mixture to your bowl.)
6. Add the buttermilk and stir until the dough leaves the sides of bowl. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead gently a few times. Pat out into a circle that is about 1 and 3/4 inches thick. Cut with large biscuit cutter or a large glass, dipped in flour to help avoid sticking.
7. Place on pan. Biscuits can be touching.
8. Brush the tops with melted butter or milk.
9. Bake at 375 for 18 to 20 minutes or until golden brown.
10. Let cool on a wire rack (or not, if you want to eat them right away.)

BAKING TIP

The closer together you place the biscuits on the pan, the softer they will be when they are done baking.

INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO

Martha's recipe and the instructions in this video really make it easy to make buttermilk biscuits, especially if you have never made them or never had success making them before. I highly recommend the video, which also does a nice job of explaining how you can use your food processor to simplify making biscuits.

BAKING TIP

Practice makes perfect. The more biscuits you make, handling the mixture gently, the better they'll be.

Presto Electric Salad Shooter Review

Presto Electric Salad Shooter Review
Meet the Presto Salad Shooter, a basic kitchen tool that you (according to me) should not be without.

My Presto Salad Shooter and I first met about five years ago. We were introduced at my cousin's home when we were working together to prepare supper. My cousin, Wil, handed me his Presto Salad Shooter and said, "Here you go, you do the cheese."

One meeting was all it took and the Salad Shooter and I knew it was love at first sight. I went home and purchased our very own Presto Salad Shooter Electric Slicer and Shredder and the love affair continues until this day with absolutely no disappointments or issues. Edited in 2025 to add that I own the original shooter. The one shown here is the newly refreshed model.

On this page, learn more about why I love the Presto Salad Shooter and why you will, too.

WHAT WILL THE PRESTO SALAD SHOOTER DO?

We use the shredder on a very regular basis for cheese since pizza is a Friday night staple at our house. As a matter of fact, ever since we have had the Presto Salad Shooter, there has been no problem finding a volunteer to shred the cheese. If only they were so keen to do the dishes!

As I edit this fifteen years after the original date of writing, I must confess that we don't eat pizza every week anymore. Age and healthy preferences now have us using the salad shooter for way more vegetables and way less cheese, LOL. As a matter of fact, I love using this machine when I prepare our vegetarian bourguignon. That dish comes together in my Instant Pot much faster now.

A less enticing but also occasional use for our shredder is carrots for carrot cake. If only we could eat that on a regular basis.

Here's a summary list:

It will shred cheese masterfully.
It will shred or slice quickly all the vegetables, fruits and cheese that you need.
It will shred ingredients one after the other, without being cleaned in the meantime.
It will send the food right into your salad bowl, onto your pizza or into your soup.
The slicing and shredding cones are easy to put on and to remove.
It is safe in your dishwasher, at least the loose pieces. The motor is not.
It is compact. We store ours neatly away in a rectangular Tupperware Modular Mate container.

MORE REVIEWS OF THE SALAD SHOOTER

"I love my salad shooter!" simply put by Roseanne Arvin and echoed by me.

"We laughed and laughed when we received this 'as seen on TV' slicing and, well, grating 'miracle product' as a gift. Who would actually use such a crazy thing? Well, it turns out that we would, frequently. It may not dice, but it does slice beautifully - thin and uniform, as well as grating everything from cheese to potatoes to carrots to ... you name it. We use it almost daily. If you're a vegetable eater or a cheese lover, you won't know how you lived without it. Easy to assemble and disassemble, and it's dishwasher safe, although you do have to position the parts correctly to maximize water flow and cleaning...It slices cucumbers, carrots, summer squash and similar vegetables beautifully..." - Nic Rosenau

"I hope they never stop making them." said another Brenda, Brenda Wilburn Flint. I am glad to see that they redesigned this appliance rather than discontinuing it.

"Years and years ago, someone gave my mother a salad shooter. She was so impressed - and Mother knew everything 'kitchen' - she bought me one. I don't even know how many years I had it, but she has been gone for 6 years, and it was long before that. How does anyone cook without a salad shooter?" says Knori.

"Best small kitchen appliance we own." said Sabey-baby though I would rate my Instant Pot and kettle higher, this is still a dandy little kitchen tool.

"An all-time favorite! "The grandkids are helping...and loving it!" said California Girl.

If you're a big cheese eater, you will agree with the final sentiment, "Yay for the Presto Salad Shooter and never shredding cheese again!"

In summary, the Presto Salad Shooter is a remarkably simple and useful little kitchen appliance and makes a perfect gift for anyone who loves salads, vegetables and/or cheese. Find your Presto Electric Salad Shooter here on Amazon.

Kitchenaid 7 Speed Hand Mixer From Martha Stewart's Blue Collection

Kitchenaid Hand 7 Speed Mixer From Martha Stewart's Blue Collection

Martha Stewart's KitchenAid Hand Mixer 7-Speed was one of the pieces that was part of Martha's Blue Collection of small kitchen appliances and yes, it was as good as you would expect something from KitchenAid and Martha to be.

Unfortunately, the mixer that was actually called "Martha Stewart" was very hard to find. However, there is a similar blue hand mixer that they call crystal blue, which I have substituted on this page for Martha's robin's egg blue mixer.

This KitchenAid mixer is great because:

It's easy to use.
It's small and easy to store.
It's heavy duty.
It's well made. (It's by KitchenAid!)
It's relatively quiet.
It has electronic speed control buttons.

A couple of reviews:

"I made my first ever batch of whoopie pies with this tool and it's the bomb!" - Doughboy

"I recently bought this mixer to complete my Martha Stewart Collection. My kitchen looks lovely in white and blue. I had already bought another mixer from another brand that I kept for a couple of years. My goodness!!! What a difference!!! This one is so quiet, easier to use and so cute. I would recommend this 100 percent. Loved it!" - Cabogirl from St Louis

Please note that the specific color shown here may no longer be available but the mixer is. Find your Kitchenaid Hand Mixer here on Amazon.

Nigella Lawson's How To Eat: The Pleasures and Principles of Good Food

In 2008, fellow blogger Amy from Americana Kitchen wrote the following about this, her favorite cookbook, on a page on another blog:

"While I love absolutely anything Nigella Lawson, if I were limited to a single favorite cookbook I'd choose her first book called How to Eat. I like to think of it as a modern alternative to the Joy of Cooking. Almost all of the information Nigella gives is practical and useful in a modern kitchen (Ms. Rombauer, I don't think I'll ever need to know how to skin a squirrel; at least, I hope I won't), and the personal stories and funny tidbits make the cookbook great reading as well.

True, if you want glossy food porn pictures, one of Nigella's later cookbooks will be your best bet, but for classic cooking, How to Eat will tell you everything you need to know to do just that: eat."

Tyler's Ultimate: Brilliant Simple Food to Make Any Time by Tyler Florence

In 2008, fellow blogger Rockycha wrote the following about this, her favorite cookbook, on a page on another blog:

"He's Tyler Florence - the hunk of HGTV (goodness gracious he's gorgeous, LOL.) He's another celebrity chef, for a long time he had a show on Food Network called 'Food 911' where he'd go to people's houses (usually women's) and teach them how to fix a certain recipe that always flopped for them. The whole time he was teaching them he'd flirt in all these cute subtle ways - a joy to watch. I loved it because it didn't matter if the lady was short, fat, old, young, attractive. He was just always so warm and delightful.

Anyway, now his show (in 2008) on the Food Channel is Tyler's Ultimate and airs usually in the afternoon around 2 p.m. central every day. He takes classic recipes - beef stew, apple pie, meatloaf, roast chicken - and then investigates how to make them in the ultimate recipe - a pretty good show and his teaching is very clear."

Raspberry Ice Cream Bombe: A Vintage 1960s Dessert Recipe

Raspberry Ice Cream Bombe: A Vintage 1960s Recipe

This is the second time I am posting a vintage recipe. Once again, I am sharing because I am participating in Merle's Vintage Challenge on Instagram. Each day there is a different theme for the challenge and yesterday the theme was ice cream so I am sharing this Raspberry Bombe recipe, which looks and sounds delicious.

It is from a 1960s cookbook called Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook, which is shown below though this copy is no longer new but rather battered, bruised and beloved.

I think the recipe looks fairly easy. The list of ingredients is not overly long and the preparation does not look too difficult. The only difficult part may be that you need a 2 1/2 quart metal mold. I will have to see what I have that could be substituted in place of that particular item. Also, you will need a spot in your freezer to hold the mold.

I will also have to find a reason to make it. Right now, when the world is turned upside down because of the virus, making a dessert that serves 12 to 16 in a house where two people live does not really make sense. Maybe I will try breaking the recipe down into half the size. I will have to think about it but anyway, here is the vintage recipe. I hope you have the chance to try it.

RASPBERRY BOMBE RECIPE

Serves 12 to 16 people

3 pints red raspberry sherbet
2 pints pink peppermint or strawberry ice cream
1 cup whipping cram
3 tbsps confectioners' sugar
dash salt
1/4 cup finely chopped mixed candied fruits and peels
1/4 cup finely chopped almonds, toasted
rum flavoring to taste

Chill mold in freezer.

Stir sherbet just to soften. Using a chilled spoon spread the sherbet on the bottom and sides of the mold. Making sure sherbet comes to the top.  If it won't stay on the edges, refreeze in the mold until it becomes workable again. Freeze until firm.

Stir the ice cream until just softened.  Spread over the raspberry layer quickly, covering sherbet. Freeze again until firm.

Whip the cream with sugar and salt until soft peaks form.   Fold in the fruit, nuts and flavoring. Pile into the center of the mold smoothing the top.

Cover with foil and freeze 6 hours or overnight.

Peel off foil. Invert mold on a chilled plate and rub the mold with a hot damp towel to loosen. Lift off the mold.

-------------------------------------

This ice cream dessert recipe is found in the pages of the 1969 version of this Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book, which you can find in my eBay store by clicking right here. Note, it has been used and loved and the condition really shows it.

Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book 1969

That's it. A dessert that suits anytime of the year. Special enough for company or for your next family get together. It really does not sound too hard to make and the only special item you need is that metal mold.

Good luck and be sure to let me know if you try the recipe!

Grapefruit, Avocado and Cream Cheese Salad: A Vintage 1950s Recipe

This is the first time I have ever posted a vintage recipe. The post is designed to work with Merle's Vintage Challenge, a monthly challenge that I am participating in on Instagram. Each month there is a different theme for the challenge and this month it is food and drink.

Today's is avocado and to link it up with the challenge, it needs to be vintage style. That is the only rule. Just let your imagination run wild though posts should be vintage and in some loose way relatable to the food of the day. Even anything avocado green would suit the theme just fine.

Anyway, I decided to share these fun avocado fruits on a rope with this vintage 1950s recipe. Yes, avocado is a fruit though we often think of it as a vegetable and we use it more like a vegetable. The recipe is from a 1950s cookbook called The Modern Family Cookbook by Meta Given, which is shown below. Obviously, my copy is battered, bruised and beloved though not by me. Yet.

Fair warning, I have not tried this recipe. When and if I make it, I think I will cheat and use store bought French salad dressing and I will have to have company because my husband does not really like avocado. Anyway, here's the recipe:

GRAPEFRUIT, AVOCADO AND CREAM CHEESE SALAD RECIPE

2 grapefruit
1 avocado
1/2 cup French dressing
Crisp lettuce, I'd choose iceberg
3 ounce package of cream cheese
Paprika

Pare whole grapefruit, removing white membrane as well as the skin. Cut out the sections, using a very sharp knife. Peel avocado, remove seed and slice 1/2 inch thick. Marinate both fruits in French dressing. Chill thoroughly. Just before serving, arrange drained fruits on lettuce leaves, with a ball of cream cheese in the center of each plate, then add a dash of paprika to the cream cheese. (The cream cheese may be omitted or cottage cheese substituted.)

Makes 5 servings.

And that's it. If you try it, be sure to let me know what you think!

See you

How to Clean and Store Strawberries

How to Clean and Store Strawberries: When you want to clean them better than just with water and you want them to last longer.

I was putting my fresh produce away this week and was thinking about my beautiful basket of bright red ripe strawberries.

To myself I said, "I wonder how I should store these strawberries to make them last as long as possible."

Of course, you need not worry overly if fresh red ripe strawberries disappear extraordinarily quickly in your home, which they normally do in my home, too. However, this time we happened to purchase our berries when we already had a ton of fresh fruit in the fridge so I thought that if there was a better way to store them, it might be worth trying this time.

Plus, of course, there is a little bit of extra concern right now that the strawberries be cleaned extra well because of the virus. Since you cannot scrub nor cook strawberries like you would a potato, a method that goes beyond simply rinsing them would be helpful.

So while preparing my cantaloupe for the fridge, I asked my assistant, my Google Home, "What is best way to store strawberries?" Google responded by pulling up the following video by Jerry James Stone:

If you just watched the video, you know that Jerry's method for cleaning and storing strawberries is not the simplest method going but I do not think that it is overly difficult. It requires water, vinegar and baking soda, three pretty common household ingredients and it requires a bit of time. Fifteen minutes to be exact but you can be doing something else in the kitchen while the berries are soaking.

I found the process to be simple and I like the idea that the berries would be extra clean and last longer. What's not to love about having your strawberries last longer and the fact that they were cleaner than normal, was reassuring, too.

By the way, the berries lasted for eight days in my fridge. Not because they went bad before the ten days were up but rather because they only lasted for eight days before we ate them all. I agree with the reviews on the video.  "It worked!"

How about you? How do you store your strawberries? What about cleaning them? Are you worried more about using fresh produce from a cleanliness perspective?

See you in
the kitchen!

All I Want for Christmas is a 6 Quart Instant Pot Duo Pressure Cooker!

All that I want for Christmas is an Instant Pot, LOL. I do not jest. I want to have one of these pots to play with in my kitchen. I have followed with interest the hype. As a resident of Canada, it is only a bonus that the newfangled kitchen appliance is a Canadian success story that was developed by a local Ottawa native.

Size was an important consideration and I have actually seen people in the stores debating which size to buy. I will say that I am curious about the 8 quart pot because it will cook two whole chickens at a time. However, as empty nesters, that choice really is not the smart one so my wish is for the 6 quart pot that will cook one whole chicken, which is more than ample for the two of us. I also have decided that I do not need the smart functions like being able to run the Instant Pot from my phone.

Of course, this small kitchen appliance will do much more than cook a chicken. It functions as a pressure cooker, a slow cooker, a rice cooker, a steamer, a yogurt maker, a warmer and it will even sauté.

Here's the Instant Pot story:

As the video says, this item is posed to sell in large volumes going into Christmas this year. If you want one, be sure to check Amazon where it is firmly placed near the top of Amazon's movers and shakers in the kitchen list. It is an excellent gift idea for anyone who likes adventures in the kitchen and who loves the idea of putting dinner on the table quickly. You can learn more or order yours on Amazon by clicking right here.

I am pretty sure that I will have an Instant Pot under my Christmas tree since surely Santa must be reading my blog. How about you? Have you purchased your Instant Pot yet or put one on your Christmas wish list? If you have one, do you like it?

Yum and Yummer Greta Podleski New Cookbook (2017)

Yum & Yummer: Ridiculously Tasty Recipes That'll Blow Your Mind, But Not Your Diet new cookbook Greta Podleski
Well, I have just read about it but I have not put my hands on it yet. Greta Podleski of the sister duo that included Greta and Janet Podleski and the beloved Looneyspoons and Crazy Plates lighthearted cookbook series is back with a new cookbook called Yum & Yummer: Ridiculously Tasty Recipes That'll Blow Your Mind, But Not Your Diet. The news was too delicious not to share even though I have not actually seen the book yet.

The previous cookbooks contained excellent recipes. I hope this new one holds up as well.  Podleski spent the last 15 months working on it and the description says that it includes healthy versions of comfort foods, some treats and gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan recipes that are “ridiculously tasty and will blow your mind, but not your diet.”

Apparently, this cookbook contains videos for every recipe. Here's the short and simple video for the Asian Chicken Wrap recipe:

The Best-Ever Egg Salad Sandwich Recipe

The Best-Ever Egg Salad Sandwich Recipe

EASY, DELICIOUS, NUTRITIOUS EGG SALAD SANDWICH FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY

We've been eating this super delicious egg salad sandwich for almost twenty-five years. It is without question the best sandwich that we make and it is most definitely a family favorite.

The recipe makes enough egg salad for two or three sandwiches but I never make just one batch. Instead, I double or triple the recipe. I encourage you to do the same if you and your family love egg salad. It takes only a minute longer and you will have plenty of egg salad sandwiches to go around.

Our recipe is a bit lighter in calories and fat and a little lighter tasting than a traditional egg salad made with just mayonnaise. We actually prefer it this way and I am thrilled to serve a more nutritious egg salad sandwich recipe to my family and now to share it with you.

THE BEST-EVER EGG SALAD RECIPE

Egg Salad Sandwich RecipeIngredients for the Dressing:

1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup plain lowfat or nonfat yogurt
1 tsp. Dijon mustard
1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

3 chopped hard-boiled eggs
2 tbsps chopped scallions
1/4 cup chopped tomato (optional)

Directions:

In a small bowl, mix together the dressing ingredients.

Assemble the salad ingredients and add 1/4 to 1/3 cup of the dressing. The remaining dressing can be used on the bread.

Yes, we love it. Hawaii AND this Hawaiian punch recipe.  You will love our Hawaiian punch recipe, too. A homemade recipe, it is simple to put together, it is nutritious and it is definitely delicious.

My recipe is shown below. The recipe for a Mai Tai shown above is for illustration purposes. If you try it and love it be sure to let me know. If I get around to trying it, I will be sure to report back, LOL.

This recipe originated from the Culinary Arts Program at Maui Community College. I am sorry to say that I have absolutely no idea where I found it but I am pleased to say that we LOVE it.

It's perfect for any party or gathering plus we often have it for a special breakfast, at a birthday party and my when he was in middle school my son even dressed as a Hawaiian and sold it at a cultural fair. No, we are not Hawaiian but he was enthusiastic about this project and, despite his blonde hair, his pretend 'Hawaiian' heritage and his punch were a huge success.

Enjoy!

The Best-Ever Hawaiian Punch Recipe

This recipe serves 20 people unless they are really thirsty, in which case it will probably serve about 10 people.

Ingredients

4 Cups of Orange Juice
4 Cups of Guava Juice
4 Cups of Pineapple Juice
1/2 Cup Red Grenadine
4 1/2 Cups Ginger Ale

Instructions

Use frozen juice concentrates and mix according to the directions given by the manufacturer.

Make sure the juices are well chilled and have been in the fridge for at least a day. (That way you won't have to add too much ice to make it cold.)

When it is time to serve the punch, pour the juices into a large bowl and add the grenadine and ginger ale. (Make sure they are cold, too!) You can add some additional ice cubes if you wish.

This recipe is close to a traditional Hawaiian rum punch...without the rum. If you wish you can add the rum by using 3 1/2 cups less ginger ale and substituting 3 cups of light rum and 1/2 cup of dark rum. Don't stir in the rum, just add it.

------------------------------------------

Well, there you have it. A simple punch recipe that is perfect for your next gathering.

Do you like rum in YOUR Hawaiian punch?

Joy of Cooking Gift Ideas

The Joy of Cooking was and continues to be quite possibly one of the most important and influential books of the twentieth century. It is certainly that in the cookbook world.

It would be of no surprise then to discover that fans can celebrate the iconic cookbook, originally written by Irma Rombauer in 1936, by wearing an apron, carrying a tote bag and even by using a kitchen towel.

I think any of these items would be a great gift idea for someone who has long treasured their copy of the Joy of Cooking. A copy of the new version of the Joy of Cooking cookbook combined with any or all of these items would also make a fantastic gift idea for someone setting up home for the first time or maybe even for someone who is looking to update their original copy of the book.

What about you? Do you use the Joy of Cooking? Would you like to own this apron?

See you in the kitchen!
