My Favorite Cookbook

My Favorite Cookbook: Time-Life's American Country Cooking

My favorite cookbook? Well, as usual, a favorite is hard to pick. One that I positively, absolutely love though is a 1989 Time-Life book from the American Country series called Country Cooking. It is my favorite because several of the best recipes I have ever tried came from it. They include an absolutely amazing corn chowder and totally a delicious chicken pot pie.

Click here to find Time Life's out-of-print American Country Country Cooking cookbook on eBay.

EDITED IN 2026 TO ADD:  I loved this cookbook when I originally wrote this post many years ago. However, today, as empty nesters, our cooking is a bit different and I don't know if I would actually call it my favorite. I still love those recipes and the book but I will say it doesn't get used as often.

Tyler's Ultimate Cookbook by Tyler Florence

Tyler's Ultimate: Brilliant Simple Food to Make Any Time by Tyler Florence

Tyler's Ultimate: Brilliant Simple Food to Make Any Time by Tyler Florence

In 2008, fellow blogger Rockycha wrote the following about this, her favorite cookbook, on a page on another blog:

"He's Tyler Florence - the hunk of HGTV (goodness gracious he's gorgeous, LOL.) He's another celebrity chef, for a long time he had a show on Food Network called 'Food 911' where he'd go to people's houses (usually women's) and teach them how to fix a certain recipe that always flopped for them. The whole time he was teaching them he'd flirt in all these cute subtle ways - a joy to watch. I loved it because it didn't matter if the lady was short, fat, old, young, attractive. He was just always so warm and delightful.

Anyway, now his show (in 2008) on the Food Channel is Tyler's Ultimate and airs usually in the afternoon around 2 p.m. central every day. He takes classic recipes - beef stew, apple pie, meatloaf, roast chicken - and then investigates how to make them in the ultimate recipe - a pretty good show and his teaching is very clear."

Rockycha, if you're reading this, be sure to let me know where you are working online now.

Meanwhile, readers, you can check out Tyler's Ultimate cookbook here on Amazon.

See you in the kitchen!

Clara's Kitchen Cookbook Review

Clara's Kitchen Wisdom, Memories, and Recipes from the Great Depression

Discover a lifetime of wisdom, memories and recipes from the Great Depression.

Clara Bonfanti Cannucciari was the 94 year-old host of the YouTube phenomenon web series Great Depression Cooking with Clara, which has had over a million visitors. She was also the co-author of the book Clara's Kitchen: Wisdom, Memories, and Recipes from the Great Depression.

Mrs. Cannucciari was born on August 16, 1915 in Chicago, Illinois and lived through the Great Depression in America. Her Sicilian American parents were hit hard by the tough economic times and her mother came up with some pretty great ways to save money on meals. These ways worked for them and their family was safe and healthy after the Depression.

Christopher Cannucciari (Mrs. Cannucciari's grandson) filmed Clara cooking her mother's meals in 2007 and posted them online on YouTube. The number of people searching for Depression and Depression food ideas helped the YouTube series become an online hit.

The Great Depression Cooking Show

In her Youtube Depression Era cooking videos she shares her recipes, her words of wisdom and her stories from the years in which she was a young member of a family without much money. She shares lots of advice on making meals for less money and includes recipes for dishes like pasta with peas and eggplant parmesan. It was definitely a simpler time and a more difficult time.

Clara says, "Welcome to my kitchen. I'm Clara. I'm 94. I've written a book to help you get through the hard times." Her videos include many recipes for a recession or for tough times. Visit with Clara in this short, two-minute video as she is interviewed by Katie Couric.

Clara's Kitchen (The Book)

The success of the web series resulted in the cookbook, which is an interesting read for anyone interested in learning about what people went through during the Depression and for anyone looking for some simple, economical recipes and meal ideas. Watch this short advertisement for the cookbook here:

About the cookbook, Rosi Creen said, "Clara was the Grandmother everyone should have! I viewed her DVD, Youtube segments and her blog. Yes, Clara blogged! When I saw she had a book due out, I think I was the first to pre-order it. I stayed up all night just to read her book. What an awesome lady! Would have loved to meet her in person. I picked up a few copies for family and friends. God bless you Clara!"

Reviews include words like touching and well-written. Readers, whether aware of the video sensation or not, are charmed by Clara and delighted to find a book on the subject of depression era cooking. They celebrate the peek into the memories, photos, and recipes of this 1920s and 1930s Italian immigrant family. They celebrate the simple recipes like Dandelion Salad, Eggs and Potatoes, Pasta with Beans, Pasta with Broccoli, Pasta With Escarole. Meals with inexpensive ingredients like pasta, greens, eggplant, eggs, potatoes and tomato sauce. They celebrate the nutritional common sense that includes plenty of fresh vegetables and minimal meat, which was done in those years for economical reasons but is celebrated today as a good way to eat. They celebrate the fact that Clara remained cheerful and practical through out the book even though she shared the struggles and stresses of life in a family trying to make ends meet.

Writer P. Duncan said, "I ordered several copies of this book. I had watched her videos and of course was charmed. I started to read one of the copies I bought and got through 30 pages and knew I was going to give more for gifts before Christmas. Thank you Clara for sharing."

The Great Depression Cooking Show DVD

Yes, you can buy Clara's video on a DVD. On the Great Depression Cooking Show DVD you will find her recipes for Pasta with Peas, Egg Drop Soup, Poorman's Meal, Peppers and Eggs, Homemade Bread, Cooked Bread, Depression Breakfast, Poorman's Feast, Twice Baked Potato and the Holiday Episode plus six DVD exclusive recipes: Pasta with Garlic, Fried Fish, An Afternoon with Clara, Great Depression Survival Tips and Behind the Scenes.

Natalie Shadows said that "It is a wonderful DVD." She elaborated by saying that "Clara was a delightful, feisty and kind personality whose kitchen was a joy to visit. I loved the stories she told about life during the depression while adeptly cooking up her recipes. The meals were so basic that they will seem almost exotic to modern palates, but they exemplify making the most of what you have and appreciating it. Every episode left me with a smile and a desire to do a better job in all areas of my life."

In Closing

I, too, think that Clara Cannucciari would be a pretty interesting lady to meet but she passed away at the age of 98 in 2013. As was required in the Great Depression, Clara did a lot with a little and she appears to have approached it all with a positive attitude. Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day Cookbook

Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day Cookbook

The New Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day cookbook was written by Jeff Hertzberg and Zoe Francois. It's an exteremely well received cookbook that will teach you want you need to know to make your own bread at home every day.

There was a video, which appears to no longer be available, in which authors Zoe and Jeff put together a loaf of their basic white bread.  It really did look simple. It would make you want this cookbook and, of course, a loaf of homemade bread.

The hardcover book is available on Amazon by clicking here.

The Asparagus Festival Cookbook

It will soon be asparagus time, a time when you want to embrace fresh, locally grown asparagus.

You might like to add The Asparagus Festival Cookbook to your collection before the asparagus arrives.

The write up for this book says that asparagus deserves a cult following and I agree. Asparagus is a very nutritious vegetable full of vitamins, minerals and fiber and lacking in sodium. Not only is it good for you but it is delicious, too and very easy to prepare.

Stockton California held its first ever Asparagus Festival in 1986 and thousands of asparagus fans showed up. The highlight, they say, was the tent called Asparagus Alley where you could EAT asparagus. The Asparagus Festival Cookbook shares some of the prize-winning recipes from the cook offs at the festival.

A new paperback copy retails for $7 from Amazon, less than that from third party sellers and only pennies more for the Kindle version.

I welcome spring with open arms...and a serving of fresh asparagus!

Five Fun Inexpensive Kitchen Gifts For Men

Five Fun Inexpensive Kitchen Gifts For Men
If you are looking for a fun, practical and inexpensive kitchen gift for a man in your life and are looking to spend $20 or less, you will appreciate the five items that I found on my search for the same. Whether it is for a Secret Santa, Christmas, stocking stuffer, birthday, workplace, thank you or other gift exchange, you will find some fun and interesting options, all guaranteed to make you smile, right here on this page. Best of all, they are all suitable for men both young and old and they are all easily purchased from Amazon so that you can find your gift item without leaving the comfort of home!

First up is a very interesting cookbook called Eat Like a Man: The Only Cookbook a Man Will Ever Need. Written by Ryan D'Agostino, it offers up an interesting collection of recipes and has real food that men love to eat and wish that they knew how to cook. It includes recipes for soups, chicken and beef dishes, pizza, eleven types of hamburgers and more. Amazon calls this cookbook satisfying, sexy, definitive and doable and the customer reviews are solid. What more could a man want in a cookbook? Learn more or order your copy of Eat Like a Man: The Only Cookbook a Man Will Ever Need from Amazon by clicking right here.

Next is a simple bottle opener, which is definitely a practical gift but also a fun one. It is a stainless steel card themed, credit-card sized opener. Perfect for the card shark in your life! Not only is it suitable for a man's kitchen but it is equally at home wherever he hangs out be it in the man cave, bar, game room, cabin or cottage. It's slim and easily slips into your pocket if you are on the move. The best part? It's attractive and retails for considerably less than $10, which makes it a good gift idea and a great stocking stuffer, too.   You can find this clever bottle opener on Amazon here.

How about an apron? If the man on your list loves his BBQ, then this apron is a great choice.  I'm pretty sure my own personal grill master would love to own it.  You can find the Grill Master: The Man The Myth The Legend Apron on Amazon by clicking here. Yes, it is under our $20 goal and yes, it has top notch Amazon customer reviews with customers saying things like "he won't barbecue without it" and "cute apron or, rather, masculine and sexy apron."

Since bacon is hugely trendy right now you might consider the unusual  and definitely unique gift idea of bacon-covered chocolate. Marini's bacon-covered chocolate, which is shown here, is dipped in yummy Ghiredelli Chocolate. Noteworthy is the fact that it is Amazon's top-rated chocolate covered bacon. It is a novelty gift item that will surely generate conversation. Find Marini's bacon-covered chocolate on Amazon here.
Many men, I am sure not just the men in my family, love duct tape. It's an important part of their lives. It can be used to hold things together short or long term. My father-in-law actually had duct tape on his car bumper when I met him and my oldest son for years carried a wallet hand crafted by himself from his favourite colour of duct tape. Therefore, it only makes sense that a man would love a duct tape-themed coffee mug like this one.  If you know the king of duct tape or at least someone who uses it and laughs about it or thinks he is the king of duct tape, then this would be a great gift item. Heck you could even add a couple of rolls of duct tape to this gift idea and still be under our $20 budget! And yes, in our family it is more than OKAY to give the gift of duct tape at Christmastime, LOL.  You can find this duct tape mug on Amazon by clicking here.

I am wife to a man who prefers not to spend much time in the kitchen cooking though he does not mind cleaning up after someone else cooks his meals and I am mom to two twenty-something year old men who have flown the coop.  My sons were quite well trained in regard to the kitchen even if I do say so myself and they have a fair amount of cooking ability. More importantly, they do not mind being in the kitchen. I know that all three of the men in my life would enjoy receiving any of the fun kitchen-themed gifts on this page although the cookbook would not be a very practical gift choice for my husband.

Looking For French Fry Recipes? Add A French Fry Cookbook To Your Collection!

Looking For French Fry Recipes? Add A French Fry Cookbook To Your Collection!
Of course it really came as no surprise that there are a number of cookbooks dedicated entirely to French fry recipes.

The book shown here is French Fries by Zac Williams. It promises recipes for ordinary French fries like "Drive-in French Fries" as well as for more unusual French fries like Parmesan,  Pataje Oorlog, pesto and sweet potato fries though of course, sweet potato fries are actually quite trendy right now and fairly widely available. It even promises dessert fries called Chocolate Fries though I will admit that those don't appeal to me at all.

It sounds like this book lives up to Amazon's tagline, "new twists for a tasty favorite" but since I haven't seen this book yet myself, I've turned to the customer reviews to see if it might be a good one to add to our cookbook collections. I found largely positive reviews, with the one detractor complaining that the book did not cover enough gourmet styles of fries.  I encourage you to read the reviews for yourself if you are looking for a good French fry cookbook.

If you are looking for new ideas to try when you make home cooked fries, it sounds like this cookbook will have a number of interesting recipes for you to taste test.  Just don't make French fries a daily habit as tempting as that might be!

Happy
French Fry Day!

Hostess Twinkie Bake Set

Hostess Twinkie Bake Set
Missing your Hostess Twinkies? We know you'll never forget them so why not try baking them at home?

Amazon used to have an interesting Hostess Twinkies Bake Set, which included a Hostess Twinkie shaped pan, pastry bag and instruction booklet. I don't see it on that site anymore but I do see it this Twinkie-themed baking set here on eBay.

The product met with mixed reviews. One Amazon customer says the results weren't too bad and another said she burnt them though that would seem to be a easy enough problem to overcome. As a final baker said, don't expect perfect Twinkies and you'll get what you paid for.

It seems to me that this Hostess set would be a fun gift, even if it doesn't exactly replicate the Hostess Twinkie.

I see that there is also a Hostess Twinkies cookbook available. That might be a fun option, too, for anyone who really, really loves Twinkies.

If you do decide to try making your own Twinkies or you already have, please come back and tell us how they turned out!

The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook by Deb Perelman (2012)

The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook, written by food blogger Deb Perelman, was released in October.
Reportedly, it is a replica of the popular blog The Smitten Kitchen albeit with many new recipes. It sounds like an amazing foodie gift idea.

Reviewers say it contains all of the three ingredients of a great cookbook including great recipes and great photos and being a pleasure to read.

The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook is another cookbook that should be on your wish list. I can't wait to get my hands on it. How about you?

Barefoot Contessa Foolproof: Recipes You Can Trust Cookbook (2012)

Ever since I first watched Ina Garten in the television show Barefoot Contessa many, many years ago, I have enjoyed her recipes and her easy style so it is with interest that I noticed her new cookbook called Foolproof: Recipes You Can Trust.

It was released on October 30, 2012, and it is already number 2 on Amazon's hot new cookbooks list. In my mind, that means something.

Amazon customer reviews reinforce my enthusiasm for this cookbook with comments like, "A practical cookbook packed with delicious recipes and helpful tips."

The Barefoot Contessa's Foolproof Recipes You Can Trust deserves a place near the top of your Cookbook Wish List.

Colonel Harland Sanders: The Autobiography of the Original Celebrity Chef

Colonel Harland Sanders: The Autobiography of the Original Celebrity Chef
When I was growing up we did not eat out very often, which I believe was the norm for the times. I remember eating out really only when mom was sick. Of course, that meant that mom didn't get to eat out as much as the rest of us but I digress.

Kentucky Fried Chicken was one of the few options we had in the small town where we lived and that is where we ate out. KFC, therefore, has an important place in my memories and I do love it though we do not eat it anymore because fried chicken it is not a very healthy option.

Because of my 'relationship' with the Colonel and his chicken drumsticks in particular, I am interested in the man and his recipes and on June 4, 2012 learning more became easier when KFC published online and at no charge a manuscript written by the Colonel himself.

The book, which is called Colonel Harland Sanders: The Autobiography of the Original Celebrity Chef, opens with the following text from the Colonel himself:

"This book, written in 1966, is about a man’s life and the food he’s cooked, eaten and served. That man is me. The food I’ve liked, the work I’ve done and the way I think are all the same things. It’s not such a farfetched idea. A lot of learned men think people really are the food they’ve eaten."

Reportedly, the manuscript, written in the mid-1950s, was found tucked away in KFC offices. Here's a short animated video that details the story of Colonel Sanders and his interesting and varied career path.

Anyway, I no longer have access to the free version but just discovered that this book is available on Amazon. Be forewarned that it is rare, which means that if it is available, it is expensive. Find your copy of the KFC book Colonel Harland Sanders: The Autobiography of the Original Celebrity Chef here on Amazon.

I did look on eBay and could not find this book but I did find a few other biographical books or stories of Kentucky Fried Chicken. See for yourself what is available today by clicking here.

The Big Cook Cookbook Review

The Big Cook Cookbook Review
It's National Frozen Food Day. This is one holiday that my husband will not clamor to enjoy the way he does when it is National Chocolate Cake Day or National Banana Bread Day.

We're not big fans of prepared frozen food because of the extra ingredients, calories and sodium often found in it.  I try not to buy too much convenience food but I will admit to buying some. However, the frozen food that we really, really like is homemade and we're having a bit of fun with this somewhat hard-to-find cookbook: The Big Cook.

The Big Cook was written by Deanna Siemens, Lorelei Thomas and Joanne Smith. It is one of those books that, when used according to plan, will allow you to prepare 200 meals in a day. I've never done that but I have tried a few recipes from this cookbook and love how it enables me to go to the freezer and remove a package with a meal already prepared.

My son's favorite of the recipes we have tried is the hamburger soup and I apologize, Ian, for not making it the last time you were home from university.  Ian loves homemade soup and really dislikes the cafeteria soup at his university so a hot bowl of hamburger soup would have been a great meal when he was here for reading week, but I digress.

THE BIG COOK is available here, on Amazon.  If you are looking for a guide to help you "fill your freezer with delicious, nutritious main-course meals" you should consider this cookbook.

The Looneyspoons Collection Cookbook Review

It's been since November 25, 2011, that we have been using and LOVING the new Looneyspoons Collection cookbook by Janet and Greta Podleski. While every meal that we have eaten since then has definitely NOT come from a cookbook (that would be too amazing), the meals that we have had from a cookbook have mostly been from The Looneyspoons Collection and, without exception, they have been delicious.

Perhaps my favorite recipe is cunningly called Thai One On and is an "exotic sweet potato and coconut soup with shrimp." The next time we try it, it will be without shrimp, to better suit my husband's dietary needs. However, if you like Thai cuisine, you will want to try this soup.

More suited to my husband's requirements is the Salmon Cowell recipe for grilled salmon in an orange-ginger marmelade. YUMMY. The doctor says to eat fish three times a week. If we had this salmon recipe every time, that would be no problem.

We've enjoyed the Hot Fudge Monday, a "heavenly fudgy cake smothered in a hot, chocolatey sauce." Really a pudding cake by another name, it was delicious and it was my grown sons' first experience with the interesting phenomenon that is pudding cake.

Finally, we took the Merry Cherry Cheesecake to my brother and sister-in-law's home as our contribution to dinner one night just before Christmas. It was lighter than the traditional no-bake cheesecake and it was lemony, too. The recipe was perfect for a crowd, feeding nine of us with leftovers for the hosts after we departed.

We love the educational tidbits strewn throughout the book as well as the cartoons. To see a few of them, why not 'like' our Facebook page, Culinary Favorites From A to Z, and share the fun!

Would we recommend The Looneyspoons Collection? DEFINITELY. We've loved the cookbooks and the recipes by Janet and Greta Podleski since their very first cookbook was released.

The Best Fondue Pot

On this page we share two of the best chocolate fondue makers and a fondue cookbook that we have discovered.
It's been a while since we've had a chocolate fondue but that's not because we don't love it. On this page we want to share two of the best chocolate fondue makers and a fondue cookbook that we have discovered.

The first fondue pot is the Cuisinart Chocolate Fondue Maker, which is Amazon's Best Fondue Maker.  The Amazon customer reviews voted this fondue pot to the top of the list and that is not surprising, given comments like, "Just plug it in, turn the knob to the setting you desire and put in the fondue" and "It heats evenly and quickly" and the nonstick surface means that "absolutely nothing sticks."  Nothing is perfect, but after reading the reviews, this is would be my choice of fondue pot. You can read all of the Amazon customer reviews for yourself by clicking right here.  Right now, Amazon has this fondue pot marked down by 58 percent and they will ship it to you for free.

On this page we want to share two of the best chocolate fondue makers and a fondue cookbook that we have discovered.
We have to admit though that we love the Emile Henry Fondue maker, too.  It is another quality product, albeit a bit more expensive, perfect for a romantic or even a Christmas-time fondue.  Amazon customer Nicole  A. Stewart summed it up nicely when she said she hosted a fondue party using three types of fondue makers and that "the Emile Henry pot cooked the best, by far." You can check out the Emile Henry Fondue Maker reviews by clicking right here.

Of course, if you are own a fondue pot, you will want a fabulous fondue cookbook.  Whether or not you are familiar with The Melting Pot fondue restaurants, you might want to try out  The Melting Pot  cookbook, Dip Into Something Different, which was the top-rated fondue cookbook a couple of years ago when we shared our chocolate fondue recipe online, and, apparently, still is.   You can read more about Dip Into Something Different by clicking right here.

Is there a fondue in your future?

The New Joy of Cooking Cookbook

The Joy of Cooking is one of those classic cookbooks no kitchen should be without.  I have one in my kitchen and when I want to know a basic cooking recipe or technique, it is the book I turn to first.

I won't tell you what version of this iconic cookbook is in my kitchen but I will share with you this bright, shiny and new 2006 edition.

The New York Times calls The Joy of Cooking
"one of the most important and influential books of the twentieth century."

Paula Deen calls it "a must-have for the kitchen."

I love the fact that it has been brought up to date so that it can continue to be used in the kitchens of today's generation of cooks.

Here is a video peek at what went into the newest version of The Joy of Cooking:

The Looneyspoons Collection (2011): A New Cookbook from Janet and Greta Podleski

The Looneyspoons Collection is the fourth cookbook by Janet and Greta Podleski.  It has been a while since the release of the last cookbook and it is exciting to see the 'ladies' back with another book.

The first two books, Looneyspoons and Crazy Plates, are out of print despite being much sought after, because the authors felt that some of the food information and recipes were out-of-date.

The new book, therefore, is a 'collection' of sorts. It includes some of the original recipes from the first three cookbooks and some new recipes. However, the recipes carried forward from the previous cookbooks have been updated to include current information and healthy eating choices.

I smiled when I read the recommendation on the cover from Alfreda Podleski. She said, "This is the best cookbook ever written." Alfreda, by the way, is Janet and Greta Podleski's mom.  She may be biased but, knowing how well received the first three Podleski sister cookbooks were, this one is probably one we will come to know and love, too.

I am looking forward to working my way through this book and to gifting it to two cookbook-loving family members this Christmas.  If you know someone who loved the first three books, you might wish to give them a copy of this new cookbook, too.
